The secret to on-camera flash Photos

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for the second Artist Date workshop – Mastering On-Camera Flash Photography! Whether you were creating with us in person or soaking up the knowledge virtually, the energy, creativity, and passion you brought to the room made this event unforgettable.

Highlights from the Day

We were honored to welcome the incredibly talented Erin Crooks as our guest speaker, diving deep into the art of on-camera flash photography. Erin's expertise left us inspired and equipped with new skills to elevate our craft. Our creatives walked away with photos they were proud of, brimming with confidence and fresh ideas.

We couldn’t have been happier to host such a vibrant group of photographers and creatives in the stunning White Space Studios. Nicole's vision in creating Artist Date was to create a space where she believes photographers and artists need encouragement. The sense of community, the open exchange of ideas, and the willingness to share both triumphs and struggles in the industry made the morning so special.

Erin’s Hot Tips

Our last Artist date is to help YOU master TTL mode, Manual mode, and key techniques like Bounce Flash and Direct Flash to create stunning, professional-quality images.

Learn the Basics and Beyond:

  • TTL Mode (Through the Lens): Perfect for fast-paced shooting, this mode automatically adjusts flash power based on ambient light and subject distance. Pro Tip: Set your camera for ambient light first, then use TTL mode to balance the exposure.

  • Manual Mode: Gain complete control over flash power and zoom for specific creative outcomes. Power settings range from 1/1 (brightest) to 1/256 (lowest light). Pro Tip: Test and fine-tune your settings for the best effect.

  • Bounce Flash: Create soft, natural-looking light by bouncing off walls or ceilings. Pro Tip: Use a neutral-colored surface to avoid harsh shadows.

  • Direct Flash: Achieve bold, high-contrast shots with sharp highlights and deep shadows. Use manual mode for precise control.

  • Shutter Drag: Capture movement and light trails by slowing down your shutter speed while keeping the subject sharp. Pro Tip: Sweep your camera to create streaks of light.

  • Light Diffusers: Tools like domes and softboxes help soften and spread the flashlight for a more natural look. Pro Tip: Avoid dark surfaces that can absorb light; angle your flash upwards or use a white card for bounce lighting.

Tips for Flash Use

  • Carry extra rechargeable batteries as on-camera flashes use significant power.

  • The fastest sync speed for most flashes is 1/250.

  • Troubleshoot non-firing flashes by checking for overheating or dirty connections.
